The neck and chest are renowned for prematurely ageing faster than the rest of the face and body (along with the eye contour area), yet they are frequently overlooked during our skincare and bodycare regimes.
In this article, we’ll be covering our top tips on how to effectively treat your neck and chest in order to prevent the first signs of ageing for longer.
Tip 1 – gently exfoliate the area:
While you might take a more abrasive approach to exfoliating the arms and legs, the key to effectively exfoliating the neck and chest area is to gently exfoliate.
Buffing from the top of the neck to the bottom of the chest with a scrub that has fine particles (we recommend a facial scrub rather than a body one, as they tend to be gentler on the skin) will help to stimulate new collagen production, which is essential for maintaining the skin’s plump and youthful appearance.
Tip 2 – choose your SPF mindfully:
As the skin on your neck and chest is thinner than your facial skin (excluding the delicate eye region) and has fewer oil glands, it requires some extra consideration to prevent future sun damage.
We recommend paying close attention to this area, ensuring that the skin is effectively covered with a high SPF. This includes the usual areas that people tend to miss, e.g. the top of the neck and just beneath the top of the bra line.
Tip 3 – consider outfit choices:
If you’re starting to witness the first signs of ageing in the neck and chest area, it might be worth going through your wardrobe and considering which clothing may cause future issues for your skin.
For example, if you have any high-necked blouses or jumpers, are they made with a scratchy fabric which will cause added friction, or a soft fabric which will have minimal impact upon the skin?
Tip 4 – introduce peptides below the jawline:
Peptides are frequently featured in firming skincare regimes and have been scientifically proven to promote new collagen and elastic tissue production, which are the two most important natural skin functions to maintain a youthful appearance.
Our dedicated Hyaluronic Acid Firming Neck and Chest Smoothing Cream has been expertly formulated with a skin smoothing tetrapeptide and key minerals which target the delicate skin to promote youthfulness. The addition of Sweet Almond Oil and Hibiscus Extract also helps provide deep hydration and even skin tone.
Tip 5 – try ‘the smiler’ exercise:
One of Pilates Expert and Nutritionist Ruth Tongue’s top facial exercises for firmer skin is ‘the smiler’ facial exercise – a technique designed to firm the cheek and jaw region.
Ruth recommends following these simple steps while using our Neck and Chest Cream to simultaneously firm, hydrate and soften the area:
Step 1: Cover the teeth with the lips to make an ‘O’ shape with the mouth.
Step 2: Smile widely while keeping the teeth hidden.
Step 3: Repeat six times.
Step 4: Hold the smile shape while placing one index finger on the chin.
Step 5: Start to move the jaw up and down as the head tilts gently back.
Step 6: Relax and repeat twice more.
